Mass and Reconciliation
The Centre of Our Catholic Faith
At St Anthony’s Catholic Church Marsfield, the Mass is the heart of our worship. In the Eucharist, Jesus Christ gives Himself to us — body, blood, soul, and divinity — so that we may be nourished in faith and strengthened in love. To attend Mass is not simply to fulfil an obligation, but to enter into communion with Christ and with one another.
As the Catechism reminds us, the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life” (CCC 1324). Here, heaven touches earth. We bring our prayers, our struggles, and our joys to the altar, and Christ unites them with His perfect sacrifice.
What is the Mass?
The Mass is the central act of worship in the Catholic Church, where we celebrate the saving death and resurrection of Jesus. At every Mass, Christ is truly present — in His Word proclaimed, in the community gathered, and most especially in the Eucharist: the consecrated bread and wine which become His Body and Blood.
The priest leads the celebration as a servant of Christ and of the Church. In this way, it is Christ Himself who presides at every Mass and offers His life once again for the world.
Why the Mass is the Highest Form of Prayer
The Mass is called the “source and summit of the Christian life” because it is both the beginning and the fulfilment of all prayer. Each celebration we:
- Worship God the Father with the prayer of Jesus Himself
- Join in Christ’s sacrifice, uniting our lives to His perfect offering of love
- Receive the Eucharist, which strengthens us with His real presence
- Are sent forth to bring Christ’s love into the world
Unlike private prayer, it is the prayer of the whole Church. It is the greatest act of worship we can offer, because it is first and foremost God’s gift to us.
Why We Celebrate Mass
We come to Mass because we need Christ. In a world full of distractions and demands, the Eucharist centres us again on what truly matters: God’s love.
- Encounter Christ in Word and Sacrament
- Be nourished by His Body and Blood
- Find strength for daily life and mission
- Worship as a community, united across cultures and generations
Every Mass ends with a mission: “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.” We are fed at the table of the Lord so that we may carry His love into the world.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is a sacrament of healing and forgiveness. Through it, we experience God’s mercy, receive forgiveness for our sins, and find the grace to begin again. Christ entrusted this gift to His Church when He said to the apostles: “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (John 20:23).
Why Go to Reconciliation?
- To receive God’s forgiveness and peace
- To heal what sin has damaged in our lives and relationships
- To grow in humility, freedom, and joy
- To prepare worthily to receive the Eucharist
Confession Times at St Anthony’s Parish
- Saturday: 11:30am to 12noon
- Or by appointment at any time
Whether you have been away from the sacrament for years or come regularly, you are always welcome. As Pope Francis reminds us: “The Lord never tires of forgiving — it is we who tire of asking.”
